Sound- Vibrations that travel through the air or another medium and can be heard when they reach a persons or animals ear.
Soundscape- A piece of music considered in terms of its component sounds.
Sound design- Process of specifying, manipulating or generating audio elements and getting sounds together(including sound within a piece).
Suspending disbelief- Willingness to watch even though its fake meaning watching for just for pure entertainment e.g Star Wars.
We watched 1 film opening. One with sound and the other without.
Screening 1- without sound
It was very boring however it allows the audience to create their own story in their head making it more interesting. On the other hand it did tend to make me the audience lose interest in the film.
Screening 2- With sound
This made everything more clear as the audience can tell the genre just by listening to the audio. Furthermore, it grabs your attention more because when you play it without sound you are more inclined to lose attention.
What difference does sound make?
Sound makes a big difference in a film, it can tell you the genre, the mood etc. I feel a movie without sound is a movie not worth watching.
As sound editor Marvin Kemer says in The Art of the Sound Effects Editor," the function of sound effects is three-fold"':
To simulate reality
To add or create something off scene that is not really there
To help the director create a mood
