4 DIFFERENT TYPES OF FILM OPENINGS:
1- Titles Superimposed On a Blank Screen
This has the most common film opening throughout history. Usually, there is a high contrast portrayed using colours, the most used one being white typeface on a black background. Studios use there because they are low budget and can be a simple way to include information t the beginning of a film.
A good example of this is:
Pulp Fiction
2- Titles Accompanied With Still Images
This is used as a small step up from a blank screen, so it is still quite simple, but hints at the genre of the film using some imagery. However, this requires to combine different media to make the background.
A good example of this is:
Wimbledon
3- Titles With Moving Images
This includes a title with moving image, sound and usually no dialogue. This serves as a metaphor or a narrative thread that introduces the storyline.
A good example of this is:
City Of God
4- Titles Built Around Animation and Motion Graphics
This became more popular in the late 1990's. The titles are part of the moving image that we see. However, this requires a lot of technology and stylised editing.
A good example of this is:
Casino Royale
Conclusion
My favourite type of film opening would have to be number 4, Titles Built Around Animation and Motion Graphics. this is because with animation you can get really creative and metaphorical, making things that should seem absurd, look completely natural. It is also great to use this type to hint at the story of the film.
Pink Panther
